First of all, Shannon Sharpe still got the raw end of the deal by the Hall of Fame voters, two days later and I still can't believe it.
As it turned out Super Bowl 43 was a pretty entertaining one. Pittsburgh won like I thought they would but they did not cover the spread. Pittsburgh left 8 points out on the field yesterday and theoretically the score should have been 35-23 and the Steelers should have covered.
I picked the Steelers 37-20, but the Steeler offense couldn't get it done during two key possessions. First, look to the game opening drive. Even though the challenge went Arizona's way, it would have been 4th down extremely close to the goal line. Coach Mike Tomlin elected to kick a field goal when I think he should have went for it with a sneak when you have a Quarterback as big as "Big Ben". I think the decison cost Pittsburgh 4 points. The second time I thought Pittsburgh should have put it in the end zone was after they had kicked a field goal in the second half and got another chance thanks to a personal foul penalty on Arizona. Pittsburgh could not get in the end zone when they were very deep in Arizona territoy, leaving another 4 points on the field.
All in all, Pittsburgh wins their 6th Championship and gamblers cashed in if they took Arizona with the points. This was a good Super Bowl and credit Arizona for never giving up and Pittsburgh for coming back for a game winning drive. Santonio was unreal for the Steelers and his game winning touchdown catch was one for the ages. A lot of people say the difference in the game was the 100 yard interception return for a touchdown at the end of the half by Harrison. Although that was a huge game changing play, I think Arizona's 1st half game plan was terrible. They ran too much and hit their 3rd, 4th, and 5th receivers too much. It was a gutty performance by the Cardinals, but what ultimately cost them the game was not going to Larry Fitzgerald sooner. If he would have been more apart of the 1st half game plan, Arizona could have had their first Lombardi Trophey.
Sleeper in 2009-I haven't looked at the odds yet but if you are in Vegas it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a little bit of money and put it on the Houston Texans to win Super Bowl 44. I think this team will have a breakout year assuming "hurricane season" doesn't slow them down at all.
Congrats to Rafael Nadal, the 2009 Austrailan Open Champion. He had enough gas in the tank left after his marathon match with Fernando Verdasco to beat Roger Federer to take the title down under. I could have gone without seeing the tears from Roger in his post-match speech. There shouldn't be any crying in tennis man.
Serena Williams also won her 10th career grand slam event, so she seems to be on track.
Wow, how the NBA may turn. The Lakers have lost Center Andrew Bynum for 8-12 weeks with another knee injury. This opens things up big time for the Spurs, Hornets and Nuggets.
UCONN is now the new #1 in mens college hoops, I wonder if they will get knocked off this week, like the 2 prior #1's.
Tennesse Women's Basketball Head Coach Pat Summit goes for her 1000th win tonight, however it won't happen. The Vols have no chance of beating #2 Oklahoma. The milestone will happen Thursday against Georgia.
Speaking of Georgia, Bob Knight to coach the Bulldogs? It might happen but I hope it doesn't. I'm actually liking Knight's work as an analyst these days more then his antics he use to display on the court.
And the Picks....1-3 yesterday puts me at 21-15 ATS.
