2/24/09-I'm going to keep this post up until Thursday. The comments have been interesting and I want to see them keep coming in. Rank your top 5 NBA contenders (1-5). I will weigh in on what I think on Thursday. Also, to my followers back in No Dak and CU Hoops fans, I am courtside at CU/Oklahoma St tomorrow night and I will have an in-depth story on Austin Dufault and his first season with CU Hoops. I've seen him many times on TV and I'm finally going to get to see him up-close. I will have that on Thursday. Also on Thursday, I will get into Tiger's comeback. If there are good picks tomorrow I will post, otherwise I won't post again until Thursday. Keep the good NBA comments coming.
Tonight's Picks. Overall Record 48-28-1 Against the Spread.

I want to hear what readers think about the current injury situation in the NBA and its affect on the contenders.
Another NBA contender suffered a key injury yesterday. The Nuggets have listed Nene as day to day with a knee injury. I saw the play when he collided knees with Bucks F Richard Jefferson and it looked painful. I would say Nene will atleast miss Denver's 3 game homestand, especially since the injured knee is the same one that was operated on a few years ago.
Key Injuries to Contenders
Boston-Kevin Garnett-out 2-3 weeks (knee)
Orlando-Jameer Nelson-out for season (shoulder)
L.A. Lakers-Andrew Bynum-out 7-9 weeks (knee)
San Antonio-Manu Ginobili-out 2-3 weeks (ankle)
Utah-Carlos Boozer-expected to return tonight (estimated 15 minues)
Dallas-Jason Terry-out 1-3 weeks (hand)
Portland-Greg Oden-has missed games here and there due to various injuries
Houston-Tracy Mcgrady-out for season (knee)
Phoenix-Amare Stoudemire-out for possibly the season (eye)
Denver-Nene-out ? (knee) Carmelo Anthony and Kenyon Martin also have had nagging injuries.
My question to readers-Name your top 5 NBA contenders (in order 1-5) based on what you know about the injuries and the teams' ability to play on and bounce back.

Top 5 Contenders:
1. Lakers - deepest and most talented team for second straight year, and proving it without Bynum.
2. Cavaliers - LeBron will be back in the finals, with an outside chance to win.
3. Spurs - Timmy and crew have one more run in them.
4. Magic - Dwight Howard is the motivated, ripped version of a young Shaq.
5. NOBODY ELSE HAS A SHOT. BOSTON IS A JOKE, JUST LIKE THEY WERE LAST YEAR. I DON'T KNOW HOW THAT HAPPENED, AND HALEY'S COMET IS NOT GOING TO COME AROUND TWO YEARS IN A ROW. THEY ARE THE WORST TITLE TEAM IN THE LAST 35 YEARS.
How can you smash Boston with their record and recent wins? They smashed Phoenix and Denver on the road. That is crazy talk
1.Lakers
2.Spurs
3.Cavs
4.Celtics
5.Magic
They're now 1-4 vs. the Lakers, Spurs, and Nuggets. And the Nuggets win came with Johan Petro starting at center on a b2b after a 20 day road trip. Is winning at Phoenix now an accomplishment? Whoop-de-do. Worst "champion" in my lifetime without question. 7 games with ATL and the game of stab wounds life to fend off LeBron last year. Oh yeah, and there was those 2 24 point deficits in the finals. We should all bow down to the colossal mediocrity that is the C's.
THE C'S AREN'T GREAT, ESPECIALLY WITH THE TICKET OUT. BUT TO CALL THEM THE WORST TITLE WINNING TEAM IN 35 YEARS MIGHT BE OVERSTATING IT. THIS IS SAN ANTONIO'S YEAR AGAIN.
1. SPURS
2. CELTICS
3. LAKERS
4. CAVS
5. HAWKS
ATLANTA WILL BE THE ONE TO SURPRISE THIS SEASON
Anyone who puts the Lakers and Cavs 3rd and 4th clearly has some sort of bias working and is lacking objectivity. LA was the best team last year and gave it away. They won't make the same mistake again unless LeBron flat out takes it from them.
As far as the C's go.... what title team from the past 3 decades would they beat? I can't think of any.
I check this blog out and the content is good and this topic is good. Why has a basic question turned into a debate over how good or bad Boston was as a champion last season? They have possibly 3 future hall of famers on the team. I just heard that they will get Stephon Marbury for the stretch run to. This team made a good turnaround and is certaintly not the best team ever, but are they the worst? Look at the Rockets in no-Jordan era. Look at the Spurs in 99 in a strike season. Don't crown Boston but don't diss them either. Back to the original question
1. Lakers
2. Cavs
3. Boston
4. San Antonio
5. Who knows? NO/UTA/DEN/ORL..one of the top 4 will for sure take the whole thing.
Bird, Magic, Moses, Jordan, Hakeem, Duncan, Shaq, Wade = All A+ players that led their teams to titles. The Celtics and Pistons championships are the only teams missing a guy like that. They won with an A- cast and borderline criminal defense. Those 3 Pistons championships and that 1 Celtic title team don't stack up to the rest of the champions in the last 3 decades. It would take a Tim Donaghy miracle for the C's to repeat. So the order of contenders is this....
1. Lakers
2. Cavs
3. Spurs
4. Magic
5. No one else has a realistic shot. Put Boston, Utah, Denver, New Orleans, whoever you want here. They're not winning it all.
1. Lakers
2. Spurs
3. Cavs
4. Nuggets
5. Spurs
Detroit's early championships were good, the other one was garbage. Don't tell me Orlando. The Rockets won their two titles in the 90's against bad teams. A bad NY team with an aging Ewing and an Orlando team with Shaq, but Hardaway never amounted to anything.

I meant to put the C's in my 5 hole instead of the Spurs
